“The house was very quiet, and the fogโwe are in November nowโpressed against the windows like an excluded ghost.โ โ E.M. Forster, Howards End
Today’s quote comes from E.M. Forster, the fantastic author of Howards End. The prose captures the changing temperatures and quietude in November, as the chilling cold stealthily envelops homes and heated spaces, akin to a spectral presence. The atmosphere is painted white, tinged with an eerie feeling, mirroring the gradual death of the world outside.
Now, letโs reflect on last weekโs blog posts and catch a glimpse of what awaits us in the coming week.
Last Week:
We embarked on the week with an exploration of the initial chapters of The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy. Within the first eight chapters, we delved into the exploits of the mysterious Scarlet Pimpernelโa figure who excels in the arts of subterfuge and rescue.
Furthermore, we acquainted ourselves with Marguerite St. Just and her husband, Sir Percy Blakeney, who is actually the clandestine Scarlet Pimpernel. Sir Percy assumes an oblivious facade to avoid detection, a ruse unknown to his wife, Marguerite. We also met Marguerite’s brother Armand, who is allied with the Scarlet Pimpernel, and who Marguerite loves unconditionally.
Additionally, we explored the origins of the scarlet pimpernel flower and delved into Baroness Orczy’s background to provide a broader context for her literary work. Narrative foreshadowing was also examined as a valuable tool to infuse hints and clues, aiding readers in anticipating the story’s unfolding.
While I initially planned to delve into The French Revolution, the exploration became more extensive than anticipated. Instead, I shared a piece comparing Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” to the Reign of Terrorโa topic I aim to cover in the upcoming week or the next. Finally, the week concluded with a celebration of reaching 500 subscribers on The Writing Post!
