Greetings! I thought I would start a weekly review and a peek ahead each week on Sunday to talk about some of the things we have discussed on the blog from week to week to better contextualize the elements of writing that we have covered. While I think this will be helpful for new readers (and existing ones), I think it is also beneficial to me, so I can keep posts thematically linked and instill a little more drive in me to keep writing.
Anyway, let’s get started!
Last week
This past week we looked at chapter 15 of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. We are nearly done with summarizing and analyzing the book now and then we will move onto a new novel, which I will breakdown and discuss every Monday. I have refreshed myself on a lot of material going through The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, so I am excited to start exploring a new book in a few short weeks.
In addition, last week I shared a poem after going through a bout of sickness (it was about time with the start of the school year), and we also explored the themes and plot of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery,” which is a cruel little story that packs a huge wallop for first-time readers. Likewise, I shared a new blog segment called “Literary Quotes” in which I examine a quote from a famous author and try to relate it to you as the reader, because I think sometimes we overlook the wisdom that masters of the craft share because we are in a hurry to become rich and famous…or whatever.
For the last part of the week, I shared a review of the film From Beyond (1986), which used an H.P. Lovecraft story as its basepoint, and then I provided a musing about spirituality, morality, and baggage that I harvested from the minds, stories, and poems of famous authors.
I think it was a pretty packed week.
This week
For the upcoming week, we are going to analyze the theme of magic in a variety of ways: poetry, short stories, quotes, and movies.
- Monday: We are going to summarize and analyze chapter 16 and chapter 17 of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which deals with a large amount of “magic”—in a sense anyway.
- Tuesday: We are going to look at a poem about the magic of love—or at least how it eludes us time and time again.
- Wednesday: We will summarize and analyze a story by a famous Irish author who examines humanity’s role as kind stewards through fantastical elements and a fine dusting of magic.
- Thursday: We will analyze a quote from one of the most famous poets of all time in which the idea of “magic” in writing comes down to one simple word.
- Friday: I will share a review of a fantastical movie based on a late humorist and satirist’s work.
- Saturday: On Saturday, we will look at the role of magic in writing according to essayists, novelists, and poets.
