Writing Prompt: Cabin in the Woods

Greetings! Today on the blog I am going to post a writing prompt for you to cook your noodle during the week. I thought it would be interesting to kick things off with a fun prompt for the spooky season. As inspiration, I was thinking about Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead (1978), because it has a multitude of elements that make it one of the greatest horror movies of all time: a secluded setting, scary monsters, and an atmospheric (and horrific) atmosphere that sucks you right in to the film.

Prompt:

As a storm rages outside, you take refuge in an old cabin in the woods. It doesn’t take long for you to realize that you are not alone.

Writing Tips

Here are some things to get you drafting:

  • Explore the conflict from a unique angle. If it has been done before, try something different.
  • Add some interesting character traits and a flaw or two. Characters live and breath and nobody is perfect.
  • Establish the setting using sensory language (hear, touch, see, smell, taste)

If you are interested in responding to the prompt, feel free to write or share a link in the comments! Or, just use this prompt to fuel your own imagination in your own seasonal project!
